This is a hike that will take two days and one night with an overnight stay in a private camp located on the slope of the volcano, where you will enjoy meals at the camp, incredible views and enough space to rest and relax. From this camp you can see the nearby Fuego volcano.

On the morning of the second day the group will ascend to the summit of the Acatenango volcano, which is the third highest volcano in Guatemala, enjoying the views it offers, returning in the early afternoon to the town of La Soledad.

DAY 1 HIKE TO CAMP:
The group will leave Antigua at 9.00 a.m. after a hearty breakfast and making sure to bring any personal items you may need plus snacks and enough water for the day hike. After an hour’s drive from Antigua to the town of La Soledad you will start the ascent to the top of the Acatenango volcano, along the way you will get four different microclimates, each of which takes about an hour to traverse. The first part of the trail passes through the same path that the locals use to access their fields; it is a steep trail that crosses cornfields and lily fields; this route allows you to acclimatize and warm up your muscles for the rest of the journey. Leaving this trail, you will find a cloud forest where the oldest trees of Acatenango are located, with an incredible biodiversity of flora and fauna; this type of forest is found in many of the highest mountains and volcanoes of Guatemala. Leaving the cloud forest, you will get some of the most beautiful views of the other volcanoes: Atitlán, Tolimán, San Pedro, Santa María, Santo Tomás, Tajumulco and the Cuchumatanes mountain ranges. At noon the group will enjoy a delicious picnic lunch.

On the third section of the trail, we pass through temperate coniferous forests and a tropical dry forest where we find trees that have been felled by the storms of the volcano. The camp is located at 3750 m. below the tree line, with incredible views of the Antigua valley and the Fuego volcano. After settling into camp, hikers can rest, relax and enjoy the surroundings while the guide prepares a camp dinner with hot tea and coffee.

DAY 2 SUMMITING ACATENANGO
The second day begins very early with a delicious breakfast, to prepare for the 45 minutes ascent to the summit of the peak. This road is steeper and leads to a rocky surface road, exposed by the winds that constantly whips the peak; from the top you can enjoy the spectacle of the nearby Fuego volcano in constant eruption, with explosions of gas, rock and lava constantly thrown and a 360-degree view of the entire Guatemalan highlands up to the border with Mexico. Depending on weather conditions, the group will stay at least 45 minutes at the summit, and then descend to La Soledad, with the opportunity to do so through an alternate route, with different microclimates and a very pleasant trail. From La Soledad we will return to Antigua with enough time to enjoy what this city has to offer in the afternoon and evening.

The cost of the tour offers you:
  • Transportation to and from Antigua
  • All entrance fees to the Park, local guide from the community of La Soledad
  • Lunch, dinner and breakfast with coffee/tea – freshly prepared.
  • Sleeping bags, sleeping mats and comfortable tents for high altitude camping
  • Jacket, gloves.
