The tour through the Almolonga Valley, west of Antigua, is a very interesting trip that takes you to an area with an amazing history. In this place was established in 1527 the city of Santiago de Los Caballeros de Guatemala, known as Ciudad Vieja (Old City) at the base of the Agua Volcano. This was the second capital of Guatemala and had a tragic fate when in 1541 an earthquake caused an avalanche of mud that emerged from the crater of the Agua Volcano destroying the city almost entirely, which would force the transfer of the capital to another destination; and while there is some speculation that the city was settled between the volcanoes of Agua, Fuego and Acatenango, it is still debated what was the exact location of the same.
